Exploring the effects of strip-tillage

 

Agronomist/soil scientist Mike Petersen is on the Orthman Research Farm this week with his sidekick Jake, digging pits and doing root studies on 18 different corn hybrids in multiple locations. He’s evaluating nodes and root numbers, size, plant height, leaf stage and root depth. Then he’ll analyze the differences among them to help ascertain for the Seed Companies what varieties the sales rep’s promote is the right one with your soils, your availability to water, fertility and management. Exciting? For Mike, it is!

 

Being knowledgeable of what happens below ground is vital to understanding what is being displayed by the above ground green portion of the plant and ultimately the yield.
